Immunotherapy is the most promising new cancer treatment since the development of chemotherapies in the 1940s and thus has the potential to produce a plethora of effective treatments for future patients fighting the disease for decades to come. Essentially, these drugs work by targeting the host immune system, instead of the tumor, in order to attack cancer cells harder and smarter than through previous treatments (Kohrt et. al., 2016). The immune system recognizes the tumor cells as foreign, triggers an immune response, and then promotes tumor cell death or growth inhibition (Berman and Simone, 2016). When considering all of the involved immune cells, cytokines, and other immune factors that play a role in the function of the immune system, it is clear that there is a potential to develop many novel anti-tumor strategies for the future (Thara Barzi, 2015). It was previously believed that all human cancers besides melanoma and renal cancer were â€Å"immunogenic† and thus wou ld not respond to immunotherapy treatment (Brahmer and Pardoll, 2013).
